“NOTABLE LAND RECORDS of PLYMOUTH COUNTY”

Plymouth County Register of Deeds, John R. Buckley, Jr., announced that the next phase of the historical displays at the new Plymouth County Registry of Deeds Building has been completed. The Registry has been proceeding forward with a series of displays related to land records in Plymouth County.

The Plymouth County Registry of Deeds is a treasury of documents relating to famous people and interesting places and buildings. This new display located in the corridor at the entrance to the Registry is entitled, “Notable Land Records of Plymouth County”.

A volunteer Display Committee made up of Dr. Karin Goldstein of Plimoth Plantation, Title Examiners Anthony Markella, who serves as chairman, Marilyn Dupuis and Paul Garvin have worked diligently to select the first group of notable land records which has been completed and installed.  The committee has identified a series of eight land records which include a copy of a deed, mortgage or plan and a brief description of its relevance to the history of Plymouth County.

This first set of documents includes the following:

  1. A deed for a portion of land in Marshfield owned by former United States Secretary of State and United States Senator Daniel Webster;
  2.  A deed for a property in Brockton which was the boyhood home of World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Rocky Marciano;
  3.   A mortgage on a property in Plymouth held by former Massachusetts Governor and President of the Continental Congress, John Hancock;
  4. A deed for property in Middleboro owned by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thumb, participants in P.T. Barnum’s traveling circus;
  5. A deed referencing one of Plymouth’s landmark locations, the “Shall I Go Naked Pasture”;
  6. A deed relating to a Scituate property owned by Thomas Lawson, “The Copper King” a former owner of Dreamwold;
  7.  A deed relating to the Marshfield home of famous author Edward Rowe Snow and his wife.  Edward Rowe Snow was known for his tradition of  “The Flying Santa” and a promoter of the Boston Harbor Islands;
  8.  A deed for property owned by United States President Grover Cleveland located in the Manomet section of Plymouth where he went fishing and duck hunting.

All documents come from the records of the Plymouth County Registry of Deeds.  The display was constructed and installed by Pasquale’s Prints of Whitman, Massachusetts.

This exhibit will be a changing panorama of notable land records of Plymouth County rotating on a quarterly basis.  Suggestions will be brought forward from the millions of recorded transactions by title examiners, attorneys, registry employees and the members of the general public.

The public is invited to view this and other displays in the entry corridor of the Plymouth County Registry of Deeds located at 50 Obery Street in Plymouth. The Registry is open Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
